Holiday home owners 'not protecting properties'

Owners of holiday homes are not taking adequate enough steps to ensure their properties are secure, according to new research.

The study by Zurich found that just half of such people have locks fitted on the windows of their second home, while only a fifth also have an alarm installed.

It was also found that around one in ten do not even know if their insurance is adequate, while the same amount also do not have cover.

Nick Brabham, head of Zurich Private Clients, said: "There has been a steady rise in the number of customers with second homes, either in the UK or abroad.

"While we're using them, we often let our guard down as we relax and unwind, but we need to ensure that we don't compromise on security or cover, leaving our property vulnerable and thousands of pounds of our possessions at risk."

Sainsbury's Bank recently urged holidaymakers to ensure they take out travel insurance for breaks in the UK.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18673954-ADNFCR
